World Braille Day Event

العربية

Acknowledging Sharjah’s nomination as UNESCO World Book Capital 2019 and in accord with its mission of empowering vulnerable and visually disabled children, by facilitating access to literature, Kalimat Foundation celebrated World Braille Day on January 4, 2020, by hosting activities for normally sighted, and blind and visually impaired children. These included storytelling, braille writing, reading and braille coded treasure hunt challenges. The aim being twofold; to highlight the importance of braille language in paving the path to literacy for the visually challenged, and to place visually disabled children in leadership contexts.

The event was held in collaboration with the Emirates Association of the Visually Impaired and Sharjah Girl Guides. It was hosted at Al Rawi café at Al Majaz Waterfront in Sharjah, which through input by Kalimat Foundation, revealed a new menu printed in braille, embracing the spirit of inclusivity, parity and self-dependence. Under the banner of the foundation’s Ara initiative, participant children were presented with a collection of books. The occasion was a meaningful platform to support social equity, foster understanding among sighted children, and promote braille as a medium of communication.
